About this work

Description

A painting in Rita Simon's Traditional Massive style, depicting a jellyfish floating in the sea. Rita Simon stated of the artist that she, "was a very childlike person, she had been brought to [the hospital] by her elder sister, in her late 70s. She really enjoyed painting and did very well. This is a late painting, playful and very successful. She had been taught to paint in water-colours and was very talented. The painting shows her in touch with her emotions, asserting herself without fury. She has used powder colour on gouache.

The title has been taken from notes made during conversations between Rita Simon and Wellcome staff between 1995 and 1997.
