Produced in Mexico. Dated November [17]92 from the Hospital de Jesús.
Unused file copy of a circular letter inviting comment from members of the Faculty in the City on the efficacy of the remedy for syphilis of "el Beato" [i.e. Nicolás de Biana, the herbalist] f
or transmittal to the Real Academia de Medicina in Madrid which evidently wished to examine the claims for the remedy.
His medicament based on the roots of the Agave americana and the Begonia balmisiana was enthusiastically adopted and experimented with in Mexico and in Madrid
by Francisco Xavier de Balmis [1753-1819], Director of the Real Expedición marítima de la Vacuna from 1803. [See Balmis (1794); and Smith (1974) p. 17] and entries under
BIANA, and NEW SPAIN, Laws. statutes(1794)].
