Biographical note

The Physiotherapists Association was founded in 1946 by a group of qualified ex-service physiotherapists who, in the words of a booklet issued c.1960, ‘desired a more forward approach for their profession’. The Association was granted a Certificate of Incorporation in Jun 1949 and in 1954 became a fully recognised qualifying body under the NHS (Medical Auxiliaries) Regulations. The Association's paramount aim was to achieve statutory registration of physiotherapists, and it was a constituent member of the working party set up by the Minister of Health in May 1954 to make recommendations on the establishment of a State Register of the Professions Supplementary to Medicine.

The Association was wound up formally on 31 Dec 1970 upon its merger with the CSP/ State-registered members of the Association were admitted to the CSP on 1 Jan 1971.
