Acquisition note

Purchased from: Stevens, London, March 1931 (acc.68130); Glendining, London, August 1934 (acc.67860), August 1935 (possibly an error for 1934) (acc.67874). No.3 carries the accession number 67487 (purchased from Sotheby's, London, December 1934) but this seems likely to be an error for 67874. No.6 transferred from Wellcome Historical Medical Museum, c.1939 (acc.91800); original accession details not discoverable but probably purchased circa October 1906 (acc.16383). No accession details recorded for no.5.

Biographical note

Hans Sloane (1739-1824), later Hans Sloane-Stanley, was the nephew of the physician Sir Hans Sloane (1660-1753). He also inherited the estate of his cousin the politician Hans Stanley (1720?-1780) on the latter's suicide, changing his name accordingly (by Royal Licence 1822). Many sources give his date of death as 1827 but his will indicates that he died in 1824.
