Biographical note

The Birth Control Investigation Committee was set up in 1927 under the Chairmanship of Professor Sir Humphrey Rolleston, with Dr C P Blacker as Hon Medical Secretary. Its work included birth control in other countries; for investigating this the International Medical Group was set up. In 1931 the BCIC was incorporated in the National Birth Control Association but continued to operate independently. Its principal achievement was in sponsoring the research of Dr John Baker in spermicides, which resulted in the production of Volpar. The committee was wound up in 1939, when the Scientific Advisory Committee was set up by the FPA.
