'Private Diary' 1850-1935

These are not original diaries but compiled at a later date from various sources – memory, letters, ESS's own and his wife's diaries as noted by him on the fly-leaves of the successive volumes. The project, according to his note in the front of Volume I, commenced in June 1916. The volumes were to be stored in the 'locked steel box at the University of Edinburgh': whence they were transferred in 1926 to the offices of ESS's solicitors.
