About this work

Description

Many are addressed to a Mons. Calmette (nos.1-2, 5, 7, 9-13, 15, 23-24); in some cases this is certainly Gaston Calmette (1858-1914) of the newspaper Le Figaro but in others it may be one of his brothers, the bacteriologist and founder of the Pasteur Institute Léon Charles Albert Calmette (1863-1933) and the military physician Émile Louis Calmette (1851-1934). The majority of the items with no named recipient are probably to the same person(s); other named recipients include Madame Calmette (no.3) and General Famin, commander of colonial troops (nos.20-21), the latter items dealing with the deployment of Senegalese troops during World War I.
