    VITAL STATISTICS. Estimated Population.—To arrive at a correct estimate of the population has been somewhat difficult, as since the completion of the Ship Canal many employees have departed from this district. The total number of occupied houses has been taken and multiplied by 5, this being the average number of inhabitants per house at the last cen- sus. This shows a population of 31,980, whereas if the rate of increase had been taken equal to the average increase between the census periods 1881 and 1891, it would be 32,147. Of these 456 were males, and 422 females,- this shows a birth rateof27'l per thousand of the population, against 28*4 for 1893.
