Manuscript copy of a petition presented to the King In 1763 by Ranby and his fellow sergeant-surgeons Messrs. Hawkins and Middleton, asking permission to try out a method of arresting bleeding on the condemned convict George Chippingdale, with the King's reply.

John Ranby F.R.S. (1703-1773) was surgeon to George II, principal sergeant-surgeon, and the moving spirit behind the foundation of a Corporation of Surgeons separate from the barbers.
