    Surgical anatomy. By Joseph Maclise, surgeon. Fasciculus 1. Irrupta tenet copula: medicinâ literis. Bears caduceus-device: a winged staff entwined by two snakes and Latin inscription. Inscription means "It holds with an unbroken union: medicine [and] literature", the left snake representing medicine and the right one representing literature.
