    The A.U.I. Distinguished Lectures were established to broaden the subject matter of lectures available at the Laboratory and reflect the interest shown in the George B. Pegram Lectures. These lectures are given at various times during the year and consist of single presentations on issues of current interest and importance. 'im; Francis Crick was educated in England, receiving a B.Sc. in physics in 1937 from University College, London. His doctoral work was interrupted by the war, during which he was a scientist for the British Admiralty, working on the development of magnetic and acoustic mines. He left the Admiralty in 1947 to study biology and in 1949 joined the scientific staff of the Medical Research Coun cil at Cambridge. His collaboration with James Watson began in 1951, and in 1953 they proposed the now-famous double helical structure of DNA and the replication scheme, for which they received the 1962 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine. After receiving his Ph.D. from Cambridge in 1954, Dr. Crick collaborated with Sidney Brenner on genetic and bio-chemical studies which gave new insights into protein synthesis and the genetic code. In 1977, he joined the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, in La Jolla, California, as Kieckhefer Distinguished Re search Professor. He has received many awards and prizes and is the author of numerous papers and articles on molecular biology.
