He is pictured standing next to the York sculptor, George W Milburn in Milburn’s studio, surrounded by sculptures and casts. Milburn is in the process of carving the statue of Queen Victoria [now in West Bank Park, York]. Balkwill was a Quaker, originally from Evesham, a retired pharmaceutical chemist. He was first admitted as a patient at the Retreat on 10 January 1901; he died at the Retreat on 3 November 1909 aged 78. He was regularly allowed to go out of the Retreat. He wrote poetry which he had published. He is pictured holding sheets of paper in his hand: perhaps copies of his poems?
