Biographical note

Glycol was first discovered by Wurtz when professor of chemistry at the Faculté de Médecine, Paris. He had obtained his M.D. at Strassburg in 1843 having previously been an Assistant to Liebig at Giessen in 1842. In 1843 he succeeded Dumas at the Faculté de Médecine, and was later professor of chemistry at the Sorbonne in 1857.
