Biographical note

Cherry Knowle was a former mental health hospital in Sunderland, UK (1893-1998). The hospital closed in 1998 and was demolished in 2012. The Hospital was replaced by Hopewood Park Hospital at Ryhope. Cherry Knowle Hospital used art as a therapy for individuals with mental illness, and as a creative outlet through art sessions and participatory arts. The Sunderland Mental Health Unit was one of the first hospitals in the North to have an Artist-in-Residence when the scheme was established in 1984. The Artist Residency programme at Cherry Knowle ran from 1984-1992, and included the following responsibilities: providing support to residents to develop and express themselves creatively through art; developing their own art practice; contributing to the improvement of the hospital environment through art works, paintings, murals and other initiatives.
