About this work

Description

1 autograph letter, signed, addressed to Montagu in London, although he had in fact left England earlier that year. The letter, from Edward Stewart at Newcastle, describes the health of Mr. Newton, one of Montagu's employees: he has been cut for a swollen scrotum and once he has recovered from this his hand will be amputated.

Biographical note

Edward Wortley Montagu was the son of the writer Lady Mary Wortley Montagu (1689-1762): the recipient is identified him rather than his father of the same name by the fact that the elder Edward Wortley Montagu (1768-1761), also a Member of Parliament, had died earlier that year.
