GENERAL The Area of the City is I3OI.150 acres. ✓ The Registrar General’s Estimate of the mid-yea.r resident populatior of Wells in I955 was 6,080 (6,050) The number of inhabited houses in the City at the end of 1955 w-as 1,862. The Rateable Value at the end of 1955 £51,689 (£49^645) The sum represented by the penny rate at the end of 1955 was estimated at . Os. Od. (£199. 0. Od.) BIRTH_RATE^ The total live births in the City in I955 was 82 (65) as follows:- Legitiraate 78 (61) Males: 42 (40) Females; 56 (21) Illegitimate 4 ( 2) Males: 4 ( l) Females; - ( l) Stii: births; There were 6 still births during 1955 as follows;- Legitimate 4 Males; 2 Females; 2 Illegitimate 2 Males: 1 Females; 1 The birthrate per thousand of the population was I5.48 (IO.5) Df4IH_RATE^ There were I54 (120) deaths in the C.^ ty from all causes during 1955, 62 (7o) Males a-d 72 (50) Females. There were no deaths from Puerperal Sepsis or other Puerperal causes. There were 16 (28) deaths from cancer 10 Males and 6 Females.
