Biographical note

The author was a pupil of Sir Astley Cooper, and after studying in Paris, set up practice at Clapham in 1835, where he founded the Clapham General Dispensary. He retired in 1863. He was the father of Rev. Paul de Hookham Silvester [1827- ], and Henry Robert Silvester, M.D. [1828-1908] [Cf. Lancet, 1877, ii, p. 789].
