This Committee was set up by Epilepsy International in 1983 and was known as the Committee on Epilepsy, Pregnancy and the Child. After the dissolution of Epilepsy International the commission was taken over by the ILAE and renamed as Genetics, Pregnancy and the Child
The first meeting of this Commission was in September 1983 and its goals were to:
1.Collect new data on epilepsy and pregnancy, including teratogenesis of antiepileptic drugs and the development of children of epileptic parents
2. Review the state of knowledge on epilepsy and pregnancy
3. Prepare recommendations for use by obstetricians and epileptologists

A subsequent mandate for the commission included the Teratogenicity of antiepileptic drugs; risk to offspring developing overt epilespy or the electroencephalographic trait; altered pharmacokinetics of drugs as a result of pregnancy and the application of genetics to the study of epilepsy.
