About this work

Description

Manuscript letter (original) offering employment to Mr Henry S Wellcome, from John Wyeth & Brother, Manufacturing Chemists, Philadelphia.

"... - if you can get good reference from your present employer you can have a situation in our store. We will give you $200 the first year and $300 the 2nd. Will not take you unless you engage to stay two years...."

However, Wellcome did not take up the offer. Rhodes James, Henry Wellcome (1994), p. 45: "At the beginning of July 1873, Wellcome arrived [in Philadelphia] to take up employment with Mr Heisher, apothecary, of 994 Fifth Street, and to enrol as a student in the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy."
