Biographical note

Formed as one of the outcomes of the Windscale Inquiry of 1977. The first meeting was convened on 16 Nov 1978, and chaired by Sir Frederick Warner; a programme of work was discussed (although EEP was unable to attend). At the second meeting on 22 Jan 1979, a number of papers were debated and it was decided to split the work between two sub-groups: one on assessment and the other on perception of risk, under the chairmanship of Professor F R Farmer and Professor T R Lee. These groups produced a draft report for circulation and comment at the meeting of the Study Group on 5 Feb 1980. The officers of the Royal Society received a copy of the final document in Mar together with an outline programme for a two-day conference on 12/13 Nov 1980, and suggested that the report should be discussed at a meeting to which representatives of government, industry and trades unions were to be invited.
