Biographical note
In 1942 SHF joined the RAMC, was appointed Major (Specialist Psychiatrist). He was posted to Northfield, a large military hospital near Birmingham which included the Military Neurosis Centre and Psychiatric Training Centre. The `First Northfield Experiment' had already been undertaken by Bion and Rickman who had established a group approach in one of the wards. SHF was given facilities to apply and develop group techniques which included the use of psychodrama. SHF was instrumental in the `Second Northfield Experiment' in which the whole hospital, including all the staff, became a `therapeutic community'. Other therapists included de Maré, James, Casson, Main, and Bridger. The files appear to be later accumulations and have been split where appropriate.
