Biographical note
In 1948 the Minister of Health convened eight committees under Sir Zachary Cope, the President of the Board of Registration of Medical Auxiliaries, to investigate the supply and training of medical auxiliaries within the NHS. The CSP was unhappy with the final report of Apr 1951, which called for a registration council of medical auxiliaries, which would be weighted towards the medical professions, and a ‘physical therapy’ training for physiotherapists, shared with medical gymnasts and occupational therapists. The CSP and other remedial professions bodies rejected the Cope Report, so in Jan 1954 stop-gap NHS (Medical Auxiliaries) Regulations were introduced by the Minister of Health, and a Working party was set up which reported in 1956
