Biographical note

William Davies DD. was Rector of Rockhampton from 1820 to his death in 1849 in his 80th year. He was the son of William Davies [1741-1817], Rector of Eastington who married Anne Jenner [ -1812], sister of Dr. Edward Jenner. These diaries, extending as they do for a period of over fifty years, give not only a remarkable insight into the life and activities of a country clergyman of the period, but also contain many biographical and other details of the Jenner family. The diarist himself married Sarah Buckle of Chepstow [1787-1816] in 1810, and her daughter, also Sarah, born in 1812, married the Rev. William Henry Bloxsome [1809-1877] in 1834. Their son was also named William Henry [1836-1889], and his signature, together with that of his mother and grandfather, appears on the inside of the covers of several of the volumes of the diary, with the date 1875.
