About this work

Description

These data cards may have been compiled from the questionnaire survey returns catalogued as WTI/DPB/2. The data was supplied by doctors from all over the world and collated by Burkitt. The cards are filled in by hand and only two distinct hand-writings can be detected throughout the series (one of them probably being Burkitt's).

Each card includes the country and hospital, name of patient, date, district, tribe or caste (or religion), gender, age (or if adult), condition or disease, how it was diagnosed, if it was related to surgery or pregnancy. Some cards also include the person's area of occupation (e.g. agriculture, farmer, teacher, clerk). There are letter codes for diet - 'U, X, Y, Z, NK' and initials of diseases 'A, D, GS, H, C, PU, VV, DVT' with other fields for entering more details of the disease where it is varicose veins/deep vein thrombosis or a peptic ulcer.

They are arranged mostly according to country or groups of countries. They are not in any alphabetical order. The cards mostly cover adults but also children. Each country seems to have been assigned a number, (e.g. Zaire is 137, India 210, and so on) but they are not filed the numerical order of numbers assigned to countries, they are random. Card groupings are by country and sometimes by more than one country although they are still all separate blocks of cards. Some include index cards to subdivide the country by the hospital.

The cards are on a standard printed format with punched holes around all the edges (for reading by computer?)
