The life of Thomas Ld Cromwell, a black-smith's son, born at Putney in Surry, King Henry Viii. first knighted him; then made him Master of the Jewel Office, Privy Counsellor, Master of the Rolls, Knight of the Garter, Earl of Essex, Great Chamberlain and Ld High Chancellor of England, and the King's Vice-Gerent to represent his own Person.
