  • A contrast between the housing conditions of the Irish rural poor and those of the middle-class urban population, envisaged as the result of Home Rule for Ireland. Colour lithograph by Tom Merry, 17 October 1891.

Trades such as smithing are often performed by landless villagers who are often amongst the poorest groups. In 1990, as much as 40% of the rural population was landless. These people often provide village services including carpentry, machinery maintenance, and livestock herding or cultivate land for absentee landlords as tenants and sharecroppers.
