On the wall by the fire hangs a handkerchief next to a mark on the wall: a line intersected at right angles by three smaller lines. The words are from chapter 2, verse 16 of the Song of Solomon: "My beloved is mine, and I am his: he feedeth among the lilies". The second clause compounds the analogy - Christ is the one who 'considers the lilies'. It is John, then, who is represented as the lover and the speaker of the words, although he is submissive in the picture ("He must wax and I must wane" - John 3.30). The lamb refers to John's line on seeing Jesus: "Behold the lamb of God!" (John 1.36). John holds a reed cross

Bible. N.T. John 1.35-38, "Again the next day after, John stood, and two of his disciples; And looking upon Jesus as he walked, he saith, Behold the Lamb of God! And the two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus.". The two disciples pictured are mentioned in John 1.37-38 as John the Baptist's followers, who desert him on seeing Christ. One is identified as Andrew, Peter's brother (1.40). Here, one of them reads a scroll of Hebrew scripture for predictions of Christ's arrival, and the other, disrobed for baptism in the nearby pool, rests his head in his hands. On the ground are a hat and crook. Behind Jesus a flock of sheep rests in front of a city. But next to them, on the left, is a tree felled by an axe (Matthew 3.7-10; Luke 3.7-9)
