Apparently shows the old hospital of Conde de São Januário, Macau, built in 1874 (Manuel Teixeira, op. cit., vol. 1 pp. 61-75). It was a military hospital. It was demolished in 1952 (ibid. p. 149). It was also known as the Hospital Militar de S. Januário (ibid. p. 117) or Hospital Militar de Sam Januário (foundation stone, p. 118), though named after Januário Correia de Almeida (1829-1901), Visconde and Conde de São Januário, Governor of Macau 1872-1874, not after the saint

Throughout the 19th century Praia Grande was the most fashionable address in Macau. It had captured the imagination of a number of artists and photographers and, from the 1820s onwards, a view of the Praia Grande was the souvenir of Macau par excellence. Both of the well-known painters George Chinnery and Lamqua were residents of Macau at the time, and the view of the Praia Grande was one of their favourite subjects. In 1844 Jules Itier, the head of the French trade commission in China, made the first photograph of this famous view in the form of a daguerreotype. In 1870, when John Thomson took this photograph, he selected a view looking down on the Praia Grande from Penha Hill above Bishop’s Bay. In the 20th century the area around Praia Grande underwent remarkable redevelopment, and it is no longer possible to see the famous view of picturesque Praia Grande except in old paintings, photographs and postcards

The ruins of St Paul's, Macau, 1870. The ruinous church of St Paul, which stands adjacent to the Mount Fortress was first constructed in 1580 by the Jesuit mission, and then rebuilt from 1602. The Baroque-style stone façade was completed in 1627 by a group of exiled Japanese Christians. The church was burned down in 1835. The surviving façade, with its four tiers of colonnades, is covered with carvings and statues that eloquently illustrate the early days of the Christian Church in Asia, and is regarded by many as a perfect fusion of western and eastern cultures. There are statues of the Virgin and saints, symbols of the Garden of Eden and the Crucifixion, angels and the Devil, a Chinese dragon and a Japanese chrysanthemum, a Portuguese sailing ship and pious warnings inscribed in Chinese
