One of the "recent trials" at the Royal Courts of Justice was the libel suit, heard in June 1891, that had been brought by Sir William Gordon-Cumming against those who had accused him of cheating at cards in the "Tranby Croft affair": Gordon-Cumming lost the case, and the fairness of the judge's summing up was denied by many

Journal of Thomas Mason's travels in Holland, Flanders and northern France, with copies of letters to members of his family. Included are an account of a visit to Leiden (f. 8), and an impression of contemporary Dutch medicine (f. 15r.). Mason was accompanied by Mr Lee, a barrister of Lincoln's Inn, Mr Thayer, 'a gentleman of the Temple', and Charles Baldwin. Their journey, a 'long vacation ramble', ended in London at the Temple, where Mason may have been a lawyer or law student. The journal is a fair copy, written by Mason for his mother. The front cover is inscribed 'This book was given me by the will of my mother 1738. TM'.

Mason, Thomas (fl. 1730)

On Lord Brougham's political ambition. A keen whig supporter, he was eventually offered the position of Lord Chancellor (ennobled 22 November 1830) despite opposition to him from the Duke of Wellington (far right) and to the right of him, Lord Eldon. Brougham was seen to sacrifice Whig principles in favour of power as he himself pointed out: 'I sacrificed the House of Commons to be Chancellor for a month' (Dictionary of national biography). In addition to politics, Brougham was also an education reformer and he took an active interest in experimental science, writing two articles on the subject of light by the age of 19
