The two pillars of Charing Cross : the story of a famous hospital / by R.J. Minney.

Dramatic historical reconstruction of a day in the life of the now-demolished Charing Cross Hospital in the Autumn of 1922, made half-a-century later on the occasion of the Hospital's removal to its present site at Hammersmith. Reconstructs the medical and surgical treatment of conditions as varied as diphtheria, tuberculosis, chronic heart failure, a duodenal ulcer, pernicious anaemia and venereal disease, and highlights the cumulative effects of poverty, overcrowding, poor housing and sanitation on the health of the hospitals mainly poor, working-class "charity" patients.
