They also look at the history of the introduction of fibre into the diet and compare dietary fibre intake in Britain with different parts of the world. Detailed outlines of how fibre from food is broken down in the gut are given, using tables, charts and electron micrographs - we see how stool size and texture changes according to fibre intake and how the transition time of foods through the gut are altered by changes in fibre consumption. 7 segments.

This is the second part of a two part programme. They discuss treatment of patients, patient management and care and prenatal diagnosis. 8 segments.

This programme is presented as a dialogue, dealing with the specific antigenicities of tumour cell populations. The antigens are of three broad types, those associated with "viral" tumours, those in chemically-induced tumours, and "embryonic" antigens. The methods of detection of the antigens are discussed, with emphasis on the different results obtained with human tumours and the lack of suitable in vitro test systems other than with experimental animals. The failure of immune responses to dislodge tumours is discussed, as well as various means by which an anti-tumour response might be augmented in favour of the patient.

Here, Dr. Roger Smith of the Radcliffe Infirmary, Oxford describes some of the metabolic effects of severe injury in man and attempts to assess the nutritional and therapeutic implications of recent work. A short summary accompanying the cassette reads: "Injury is a complex insult which produces widespread effects on body composition, energy exchange and hormonal balance. Studies on protein and ketone body metabolism suggest that these are closely linked. The loss of muscle protein after injury may be due to failure of synthesis as well as increased breakdown. Measurement of circulating levels of branched-chain amino acids and of urinary 3-methylhistidine (as an index of muscle catabolism) provide support for these ideas. Out-standing problems include the effect of immobility on the skeleton and muscle, and the ways in which muscle protein synthesis may be stimulated.
