What brought you to our website today?

Sir Richard Blackmore was a physician who wrote numerous epic poems such as 'Eliza: an epic poem in ten books' (1705). John Henley was a dissenting minister who preached at the Oratory in Clare Market (Houghton Street, London). An example of his published sermons is 'Sion in perfect beauty: or, the heaven of heavens: a sermon deliver'd in the Oratory by Lincoln's-Inn-Fields, on Sunday, April 26, 1730' (London 1730)

Hoadly was physician to King George II. He was son of Bishop Hoadly and brother of John Hoadly, dramatist and chaplain to the Prince of Wales
The lady portrayed might be Hoadly's first wife, Elizabeth Bath, or his second, Anna Armstrong. She is shown in 17th-century costume and holding a mask, in allusion to Hoadly's activity as a playwright: his comedy The suspicious husband, written with his brother John's assistance, was performed at Covent Garden in 1747 with the participation of Garrick

Date of birth of sitter given in the Burgess catalogue (loc. cit.) and in the Dictionary of national biography as 1682, but according to Kaye Bagshaw, October 1997, that is the date of birth of the sitter's father. Reproduced in the Oxford dictionary of national biography (article by Kaye Bagshaw) as a portrait of William Barrowby (1682-1758)
