Biographical note

Maternity Care in the Worldwas first published in August 1966, after the ICM/FIGO Joint Study Group (JSG) was formed to undertake a survey of the training and practice of midwives and maternity nurses. A questionnaire was formulated, and developed into an extensive research project which struggled initially to obtain funding to carry out this work. The information obtained from this survey was finally published in book form entitledMaternity care in the World - An International Survey of Midwifery Practice and Training.

The JSG continued to work closely with the ICM/USAID Project and other international organisations and experts in the field of MCH, and at a full meeting of the ICM/FIGO JSG in July 1975, a decision was taken to update the book, and a second edition was published in 1976.
