Waylett family: miscellaneous papers

Collection of medical receipts in English and Latin. An Epitome of the whole course of Phisike by question and answer. [Followed by] A list of women delivered by W[illiam] Waylett [1728-1815], since settled at Lydd, and grandson of the first owner. These lists date from 27 May, 1757 to 29 January, 1815.

On the first leaf 'William Waylet his Booke. Ano Domini 1658', in the upper corner 'Price 11s. 1111d.' On the second leaf 'William Waylet his Booke ano Domini 1657'. The receipts run from p. 1 to p. 124, 144-151: the 'Epitome' is on pp. 152-229. Pp. 230-234 and p. 237 contain holograph genealogical notes on the Waylett Family by Dr. F. W. Cock, dated 1904.

Starting from the other end of the volume, are two leaves of notes on Waylett biography also by Dr. Cock. These are followed by 30 ll. containing the younger Waylett's 'List of Women Deliv[ere]d by Waylett since settled at Lydd'. This list is divided into 9 columns headed 'Date, Name, Place, Month of Pregnancy, Character of Labour and Presentation, Sex of Child and Number of Pregnancy, Fees paid or unpaid'. There are 2,863 entries, dated between May 27, 1757 and Jan. 29, 1815.

Waylett's 'List of Women Deliv[ere]d' has been transcribed by David Burgess, who has kindly allowed the Wellcome Library to make his transcript available to researchers (see MS.4979a). The transcript is arranged in both chronological and surname orders.

The list is followed by two pages of notes and a summary by Dr. Cock. Following these is a copy of Dr. Cock's The Life-work of an 18th cent. Man-Midwife, Wm. Waylett, 1757-1815. A sketch (London: Burt & Sons. 1907), cut up and laid down. This copy is printed on one side only (10 pp. 8vo. 14 × 10 cm.), and formed the President's Address 1907 to the Harveian Society of London. The original holograph draft of this paper is entered as MS.1698 in the Wellcome catalogue. Finally there is an inserted original account by Samuel Prescott, Apothecary, amounting to £1: 17: 6, for medicines supplied to 'Mr. Thos. Osborne Gent.' in 1743-4, and paid on 24 May, 1745 by his Executors to Samuel Prescott (1 p. 4to. 21½ × 14½ cm.).
