James Blackbourne is named as a barber-surgeon in The annals of the barber-surgeons of London, ed. Sidney Young, London 1890, pp. 330-331, entries for January 1611. He is also described as a surgeon to the Queen's household in 1615: see Elizabeth Lane Furdell, The royal doctors, 1485-1714: medical personnel at the Tudor and Stuart courts, Rochester, New York: University of Rochester Press, ca. 2001, p. 113
