Biographical note

The International Union of Air Pollution Prevention and Environmental Protection Associations (IUAPPA) is an international federation of civil society organisations concerned with air pollution. It aims to promote the development and implementation of more effective policies for the prevention and control of air pollution, the protection of the environment and the adoption of sustainable development, to secure a cleaner and healthier atmospheric environment. IUAPPA was formed in 1964 with six non-governmental organisations from Argentina, France, West Germany, Japan and USA. Each member took turns running the Secretariat as well as the International Congress. Membership has increased over time and stands at 40 members at November 2023.

As well as the World Clean Air Congress, first organised in 1966 and held every three years, IUAPPA's main activities comprise:

- Sponsoring regional conferences for developing countries;
- Disseminating information about pollution legislation and control techniques;
- Encouraging wider research and scientific co-operation;
- Developing programmes and initatives on international environmental issues;
- Lliaising with other national and international scientific, technical and control organizations.

From the early 1980s to early 2020 Environmental Protection UK (SA/EPU) acted as the IUAPPA Secretariat.
