About this work

Description

Maurice Wilkins’ laboratory notebook with notes made as a physics undergraduate, St John’s College Cambridge, Apr 1936, including formulae, circuit diagrams, line graphs and current and voltage readings, relating to topics including the use of a Kelvin Bridge, diodes, and the measurement of electro-magnetic frequency. Wilkins subsequently used the notebook in the Medical Research Council (MRC) Biophysics Unit, King’s College London, 1956, for research notes relating to an article on nucleoprotein (possibly ‘Physical studies of the molecular structure of deoxyribose nucleic acid and nucleoprotein’, published in Cold Spring Harbor Symposia on Quantitative Biology, 1956), including notes on the sources of DNA samples (loligo and sepia squid sperm), comment on the measurements obtained from x-ray diffraction photographs, whether samples were wet or dry, and the humidity at which the photograph was made. Also results obtained from sea urchin DNA samples. Original volume title ‘DNA Wilkins 1956'.
