Description

The man sits on a couch, his trunk supported by bolsters. He clasps his hands and presses his right foot against the instep of his left foot in pain. A surgeon or other healer performs a manual operation (not depicted) near the man's groin

Creator/production credits

Attributed by Mr Nicholas Turner, 1999, to an Italian hand, possibly Tuscan, ca. 1600. Four drawings apparently by the same hand were offered for sale at Christie's Amsterdam, 10 November 1999, lot 307, as by Pieter de Jode I: they show worshippers praying by the tomb of a saint and saints blessing and praying
