About this work

Description

In July 1752, Michel Soulavie, valet to the household of the Marquise de Brégançon, fell seriously ill, and his employer arranged medical treatment for him. The first medical bill is dated 6th June, and includes charges for over thirty different treatments costing a total of 15 livres, 6 sous. The second bill, dated a week later, includes around twenty treatments, costing a total of 11 livres, 8 sous. These treatments include a variety of tisanes, cordials, unguents and balms, all prescribed by Montpellier apothecary M. Chambon.

The next five documents consist of bills, and receipts for payment of same, covering the costs of the coffin, pall bearers and funeral mass for the interment of Michel Soulavie.

The final item is a retrospective bill issued by M. Frontin, surgeon, who bled the patient twice during his illness.
