Biographical note
Project Summary:The Kursk is a new piece of theatre made in collaboration with playwright Bryony Lavery due to be performed at the young Vic in spring 2009. The inspiration for the piece comes from the tragic submarine disaster in 2000 when the Kursk, a Russian nuclear submarine, suffered catastrophic explosion and sank with all hands. Through this piece of highly experimental theatre we want to examine the psychology of trauma, stress and confinement. Working with naval psychiatrists we wish to create a theatrical environment where we can take our audience on a voyage of the imagination to allow them to experience a microcosm of the submariners' life. We are asking The Wellcome Trust to fund a discrete element of the project - a research and development phase with naval psychologists including a consultation period, 2 weeks of workshopping and creation of the theatrical environment with the full company and a psychological consultant, concluding in three work in progress performances.
