About this work

Description

Movie showing changes in spindles and microtubules during first mitosis in sea urchin (Lytechinus pictus). The data are signals from rhodamine-labelled tubulin. At the start of the animation the tubulin concentrates at one point outside the nucleus (the spindle pole), then as the nuclear envelope breaks down the microtubules enter the nucleus, forming the mitotic spindle. This then disassembles rapidly as cytokinesis begins. Because the plane of the spindle and that of the confocal section were not exactly the same, only the left-hand spindle pole is seen clearly.
