Alex Bateman gained a BSc in biochemistry from the University of Newcastle in 1994, before moving to the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge, where he earned his PhD.
Since 1997, Alex has worked at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute near Cambridge, where he leads the Pfam protein families database, and the Rfam database of non-coding RNAs.
In 1998, Alex Bateman led a team who delivered the protein analysis for the publication of the human genome.
From 2004-2008 Alex edited the database issue of the journal Nucleic Acids Research, and still serves on their editorial board. Since 2004 he has been Executive Editor for the journal Bioinformatics.
In 2007, he was appointed the Director of Graduate Studies, with responsibility for PhD students, a post which he continues to hold.
