About this work

Description

In 1948, Dr Tom Somerville, CCU medical superintendent, conducted home visits to families in the Chalke Valley to note the occurrence and record symptoms of colds in rural households. The study focused on symptoms observed in infants under school age.

Other studies were carried out in Kent and Sheffield, observing a cold epidemic in 1957, and conducting vaccine studies in the 1950s, respectively.

A study was also carried out by the British Antarctic Study to examine the relationship between climate and the cold virus, in order to examine whether remote communities had fewer antibodies due to their isolation.
