Mr. Chairnan and Gentleuen, I have the honour to present my /innual Report vdth that of the Public Health Inspector, for tlie year ended December 31st, i960. The Registrar General's estimate of the population at mid-year Mras 8,360, The population at the Census (1951) vas given as 8,196. The Birth Rcto shows a fall. The number of live-births vra,s 150 compared •livith 161 in 1959. There were 7 illegitiraato births, compared \ri.th 6 in 1959® There were 3 still births, compared with 2 in 1959. The Deatli Rate showed a slight rise. The total of deaths 'Vi'as 119 conpared vjith 113 in 1959. '.'ith the ever increasing number of elderly persons in tlie population, a rise in the death rate must be expected in the tiiture. Diseases of the heart and circulatory system accounted for 67 of the deaths, and cancer for 15, '^he figures for 1959 were 58 and 18, There was a fall, in the Infantile Death Rate. Two infants under a year old died compared \'d.th 8 in 1959. There were no deaths associated with child- birth. One death was due to a motor accident, and 6 were caused by other accidents. There were no deaths from T'ubcrculosis compared with 1 in 1959 2nd 3 in 1958, The analysis of the causes of death amongst the population as a whole shows tliat diseases of the heart and circulatory system, were tlie largest cause, accounting for 56 per cent of the deatlis. Pneumonia accounted for 5 deaths, bronchitis for 5 and Influenza A. It will be seen from the reports upon samples, that the quali'ty of the water supply is satisfactory, and tlie quantity is becoming m.ore adequate. The total number of cases of infectious diseases notified totalled 203, compared iri-th 36 in 1959» there being more cases of measles, 188 compared with 28 in 1959. There were 8 new cases of Tuberculosis notified during the year. Modern methods of diagnosis and close co-operation between the various authorities responsible for the health of the population bring many of the unsuspected cases to light. The Xray Units of The ..•olsh j-logional Hospital Board, continued to visit the district during the year, B.C.G. vaccination against Tuberculosis is carried out in tlie Secondary Schools and at Chest Clinics.
