The folklore tales are taken from the following publications: George Ewart Evans, The Pattern Under the Plough; John Wesley, Primitive Physic (1st & 23rd Editions); George L. Gomme, The Gentleman's Magazine Library (Volume 1), and The Diary of Samuel Pepys.

Topics covered in the calendar include: blood letting, a cure for earache (which involved blowing tobacco smoke into the affected ear) and a cure for gout (which involved applying a raw lean beef-steak to the gouty part and changing this every 12 hours until the patient had recovered).
