About this work

Description

The title of this DVD is derived from Jan Svankmajer's work 'Transmutation of the senses'. The artist filmed and photographed her breast cancer treatment during which she became highly suggestible to other patients' remarks. Comments she collected are; 'wading through treacle', 'a hammer to crack a nut', 'a head full of cotton wool', 'bald as a coot' and 'losing your marbles'. Visually the charcoal circles are to suggest that her tumour is shrinking (which she was encouraged to visualise), the empty glass head is filled with different things to represents being befuddled by strong drugs, red ink mimics the drug epirubicin and chick peas rattle around (the pituitary gland is the size of a chick pea). The soundtrack features the pizzicato sound of an out-of-tune violin that has been dropped.
