About this work

Description

Notes of lectures on medicine, chemistry, and botany, taken down when a student at Edinburgh University: in Latin. Contents: (1) P. (A). Institutiones medicae (pp. 1-33). At the end 'Edinburgi quinto Calendarum Martii. MDCCXIV'. (2) P. (A). Praxis medica (pp. 45-104 + 2 ll.). Signed at the end 'Finis 20 Junii Anno Domini. 1713'. (3) Crawford (James) [1685-1726?]. A course of chymie (114 pp.). At the end of the text (p. 111) 'Tractatus chymici a Doctore Crawford dictati. Finis. Edinburgi. Kalendis Junii MDCCXIII'. (4) Preston (George) [d. 1738]. Catalogus plantarum earumque virtutes (pp. 117-153). The end of this work is found on pp. 37-39 of the first pagination. It concludes (p. 39). 'Finis'. Here was the length Preston's Dictates came. Edinburgi. 12 April 1714'. The first two works are definitely texts of lectures by Archibald Pitcairne [1652-1713]; on the title of each is the monogram 'AP', and the texts correspond with those of MS. 3914, though the first of them is dated 1714. Pitcairne was appointed in 1685 to be one of the three 'Professors of Medicine in the University', but according to Sir Alexander Grant 'The story of the University of Edinburgh', Vol. II, p. 400, he never lectured at all. He died on 20 October 1713 [see the Dictionary of National Biography]. On the first leaf 'E Libris Jo. Fullerton 3° Nonas Augusti 1718'. Produced in Edinburgh.
