About this work

Description

To the admirers of the wonderful production of nature, to be seen alive at no.99 Holborn Hill : a most astonishing creature, called the Ethiopian Satyr, or Real wild-man of the woods ... Advertising broadside or handbill advertising what appears to be a missing link "'twixt brute and man ... between the rational and brute creation ... from the desarts [sic] of Abyssinia ... a striking resemblance of the human species." placed on public display in London. It was about 5 feet tall, had a black face surrounded with white hair and "posteriors ... [coloured] blue and scarlet". The text states that "Linnens, Basson, Johnston and Gesner's natural histories" made no mention of this creature.
