About this work

Description

Copy letter (7 January, 1985) from Vane to Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, regarding government policy to limit the range of medicines that can be prescribed under the National Health Service ("I do respectfully urge you to have these proposals reconsidered, for the medical profession as well as the pharmaceutical industry are strongly opposed to them and their long-term damage may well be irreparable").

Reply (29 January, 1985) from Prime Minister Thatcher (original letter from 10 Downing Street - signed, 2 sheets), in which Sir John's concern is noted but argues that the NHS cannot be exempted from "a tight control on public expenditure".
