About this work

Description

A single sheet of (hard) toilet paper from a pack of loose, single sheets, probably dating from about the 1890s. The paper is printed with an illustration of a polished wood case that would have held the sheets, hung from a nail on a toilet wall, available at 1/- from John Miller, Ltd., manufacturing stationers, 116 Renfield Street, Glasgow. This may have been a sample sent out to prospective retailers, hence the printing on the paper. It is "reference no. 5160". We also have examples of Miller's "Silkine", "Excelsior" and "Purolette" brands of toilet paper (EPH471:37, EPH471:39, EPH471:40).
